TV unit

A TV unit wants to be low and wide: 1800 mm long by 450 high, because the centre of the screen has to land at seated eye level, around 1100 mm off the floor. The open bays either side are not forgotten doors: a set-top box behind a solid door no longer sees the remote.

On its own this cabinet uses only 24 % of the 4 sheets it consumes. That is normal, and it is why the app nests the whole job in one go: one carcass's offcuts take the small parts of the others.

Height follows the seat

Sitting on a sofa, your eye is about 1100 mm off the floor. The centre of the screen belongs there. A 55-inch television is 680 mm tall, so its base sits around 760 mm: the unit must not exceed 450 to 500 mm if the screen stands on it.

Those figures are adjustable, but the order of reasoning does not change: the seat sets the eye, the eye sets the centre of the screen, the screen sets the height of the unit. Not the other way round.

Two open bays, for a technical reason

The side bays have no fronts because they hold the electronics: router, set-top box, console. A solid door blocks the remote's infrared and traps the heat of a device that runs continuously.

A glass door would solve the first problem but not the second. The generator makes an open bay as readily as a closed one: here it is the design of the piece, not an omission.

How tall should a TV unit be?

400 to 500 mm when the screen stands on it. The reference is the centre of the screen at about 1100 mm off the floor, which is seated eye level. A taller unit makes you tilt your head up and tires your neck within an evening.

How do you run cables through a TV unit?

Through a cut-out in the back panel, behind the bay that holds the electronics. Cabinet·CNC produces that cut-out in the panel's own outline, so it comes out in the DXF and the G-code instead of being made with a hole saw after assembly.
